NOTE: Everyone is welcome to be in Symphonic Band and in the Irish Guard!
HOW TO SIGN UP FOR BAND:
If you are NEW to DHS or are currently in Symphonic Band at DHS, list Symphonic Band as your first choice elective. If you want to be in an advanced Band (Wind Ensemble or Jazz Ensemble), play an audition in March, and your schedule will be changed if you make it into the ensemble.
If you are currently in Wind Ensemble or Jazz Ensemble, list that class as your first choice in IC.
HOW TO SIGN UP FOR ORCHESTRA:
List Orchestra as your top choice elective in IC.
KEY POINTS:
Auditions are ONLY required for students who want to be in an ADVANCED band: Wind Ensemble or Jazz Ensemble.
There is NO audition required to be in Symphonic Band or Orchestra at DHS. All students with middle school experience are welcome to join these ensembles.
Audition materials can be found at the bottom of this document.
WHAT ARE AUDITIONS AND HOW DO THEY WORK?
To join the advanced ensembles of Wind Ensemble (the top concert band) or Jazz Ensemble, an audition is required.
Ensemble auditions are one-on-one playing assessments done for Mr. Polot at your school site, which serve two purposes:
1) give Mr. Polot an idea of what you need to work on so he can help you improve
2) place you in the correct ensemble(s) according to your ability.
Auditions consist of excerpts (snippets of music), scales, and sight reading. Jazz auditions also include an improvised solo.
Mr. Polot will visit each middle school and hear each audition there.
WHEN ARE AUDITIONS?
WHERE CAN I FIND THE AUDITION MATERIALS?
The audition materials can be found at the bottom of this page!
Make sure to read the instructions carefully and learn the audition material for your correct instrument and desired ensemble.
WHERE/WHEN WILL RESULTS BE ANNOUNCED?
Audition results will be posted on the band room door and the music website (www.DublinHSMusic.org). They will also be emailed to incoming students.
Please be patient. It can take a few weeks to hear every student and place students accordingly. Additionally, it takes time for the counseling department to place each student in the correct class.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION AND REMINDERS:
All students who are already in Wind Ensemble or Jazz Ensemble must re-audition each year.
Students who do not audition will be placed in Symphonic Band.
All 8th graders are strongly encouraged to be in Band at DHS.
8th graders are encouraged to audition for Wind Ensemble or Jazz Ensemble. It can’t hurt to try! No matter what, you will still get to be in Symphonic Band + marching band.
Transfer students may audition by emailing a single video of each of the components of the audition, minus sight reading, to Mr. Polot as far prior to Band Camp as possible.
